Uplifting News on Omega-3’s

Can eating fish raise your spirits? Dutch researchers found that people whose diets were high in omega-3’s – the healthy fats in fatty fish, walnuts and flaxseed – were less likely to suffer depression. Omega-3’s may help boost levels of natural antidepressants in the brain.

Several clinical studies show that omega-3 fatty acids can allay depression and other mood disorders (Annals of Clinical Psychiatry 2000 Sep:12(3):159-65). The brain needs fatty acids to keep cell membranes functioning and nerve cells healthy. When omega-3 fatty acids are lacking, the body does not break down serotonin, epinephrine and dopamine effectively, and those brain chemicals can then wreak havoc with emotions. These fats are found in seaweed, flax and all fish, particularly cold water fish such as salmon, halibut and cod.
